French Drain or Channel Drain.  Oklahoma Drainage and Sprinkler Repair can explain the benefits and the limitations of both.

French Drain Installation 

French Drain Installation is a central focus for Oklahoma Drainage and Sprinkler Repair. French Drains solve drainage problems for areas that have large-volume water problems. This includes areas where water runs under fences or stands along driveways.

The design of a French Drain is simple. A trench is dug and the dirt is removed. A perforated drain pipe is placed in the bottom of the trench. The Drain Pipe has thousands of small holes in it and a soc filter around it to keep out debris.

Gravel then is placed on top of the drain.  Water travels through the gravel all along the trench.  It enters the French Drain pipe and travels down hill to the exit point.

Many people confuse a Surface Drain with a French Drain.  Below is a Surface Drain.

Surface Drains are used to drain away water in a smaller, more focused area than a French Drain.  They handle a lower water volume.  ” IF YOU NEED TO DRAIN A PUDDLE USE A SURFACE DRAIN! IF YOU NEED TO DRAIN A POND USE A FRENCH DRAIN.”

Typically French Drains don’t work well in small focused areas like walkways or small flower beds.  Surface Drains best handle those areas.

Channel Drain Installation Is a Central Focus for Oklahoma Drainage.  We have been Installing Channel Drains set in Concrete since 1993.

Channel Drains can look great and be very functional and durable.

However, A Channel Drain is not an easy thing to install!  It takes a great deal of precision, Experience, and Attention to Detail.  This is Definitely Not something to allow your Landscape Company to attempt, or your Brother-In-Law!

Just because someone is skilled at pushing a mower around, doesn’t mean you should let them cut across your driveway with a concrete saw.

I get a lot of business fixing and replacing Drains of all types that were installed incorrectly by landscape companies and armatures.  Typically, they stick to messing up French Drains, but I have fixed Channel Drains that were an absolute “Train Wreck!” as well.

FRENCH DRAIN IN EDMOND OKLAHOMA, 

Oklahoma Drainage – French Drain Installation, Drainage System Design, 

Recently Oklahoma Drainage installed a large 6-inch French Drain in Edmond.  The customer had water running under his back porch step and into his basement.  We did a Free Drainage Diagnostic and Estimate.

The French Drain design that we proposed would intercept the surface water and subsurface water that was flowing under the steps.  The French Drain design called for a 6 inch French Drain to be installed above and several feet away from the steps.  It would run around the house parallel to the foundation and about 5 feet to the East.

The French Drain would run past the steps to a point where water must cross the French Drain or run up hill to the steps which in this case was not possible.  Once past the steps, the French Drain would transition to Solid 6 inch Drain Pipe and continue on around the house to the Pop-Up Emitter down hill in the side yard.  Along the way we attached several Gutter Down Spouts into the French Drain.

 

WHERE WE HAVE WORKED!

In 1993 we had no website.  I stuck little signs on the side of the road as advertisement.  I got my first Drain Installation work in March of 1993 in Norman.  It was in Brookhaven North of Robinson Street on the West side of I 35.

Here is a description of other recent work.

A little bit North of Downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Drainage installed a 6-inch French Drain between two businesses which were less than three feet apart.  The French Drain went between a Law Firm and a Tire shop.  Water was leaking through the walls of both businesses.  Gutters between the two establishments were dumping a huge amount of water.  We installed a 6-inch French Drain between the gutters.

It took a long time to get the dirt out of the trench for the French Drain.  It was a very tight fit.  We had to use a little red wagon to haul out the dirt for the French Drain and haul back in the crushed limestone for the French Drain.  It looked a little silly, but it was the only thing we could find that was narrow enough to fit between the buildings.  A French Drain that normally would take 1 day to install took three.

Oklahoma Drainage and Sprinkler Repair has been diagnosing and solving Drainage Problems since 1993.  Water has the ability to get into places around your home where you really don’t want it to be.

Some drainage problems are easy to solve.  Typically, water enters the problem drainage area one way from one source.  The really tricky drainage problems occur when water enters the problem drainage area from multiple directions and from multiple sources.  Sometimes a secondary water source can’t be seen or identified until the primary water problem source is eliminated.

An example of this occurs when water is running into a problem area in an obvious way over the ground where you can see it.

Simple enough.

A drainage system is installed with a surface drain as the “intake” with drainage pipe running to an exit point.  Initially the water drains away, and everything looks great.

The next day water is back and is all around the surface drain, but below the edge and it hasn’t rained at all, so no additional water ran over the surface of the ground to flood the area.

The primary water source was solved, (The surface water run off) but the secondary water source was not.  Which was sub-surface water, (ground water) running into the area.  A surface drain can’t drain “ground water.”  A French Drain should have initially been installed instead of a Surface Drain.  A French Drain can drain both Surface Water and Ground Water.

French Drain Installation has been an area of focus for us for the past 26 years.  During that time we have installed over 1000 French Drains in the Oklahoma City area.

A French Drain is one of several types of Drains that can make – up a Drainage System.   French Drains are intended to move large amounts of water away from a Problem Drainage Area.  Water may be standing in that area, flowing across the area on the surface, or flowing across the area below ground or “Sub Surface.”  A French Drain can remove Standing Water, Water Flow at ground level, or water flow below ground level. (Surface Drains can’t do this!)

Recently we installed a Double Six-inch French Drain in Edmond.  A Double French Drain is simple.  Instead of installing one French Drainpipe, You install two French Drainpipes side by side in the same trench.  This is necessary when trying to divert a large volume of water that is moving fast down a steep incline or hill.  The Trench is wider and deeper than normal and can handle a huge volume of water.

A Double French Drain also may be considered when trying to protect a home or important building from potential flooding.  Many times the installation of two French Drains side by side is overkill.  It is done to ensure the customer has piece of mind and never has to worry about potential flooding.

A French Drain many is  used to move water away from or protect foundations.  A French Drain will move both Surface Water and Sub Surface water away from a buildings foundation to an Exit Point where the water can be released without doing damage.

Drainage Systems have several basic parts.

Water entry is the process where water enters the Drainage System.  This done with water entering drain pipe through a French Drain.  Water flows to a low area with a trench.  In the bottom of the trench is a Perforated French Drain Pipe with a liner or a soc.  Gravel or crushed limestone fills the trench on top of the French Drain Pipe.

Water can also enter a Drainage System through a Surface Drain.  Water flows to a Drainage Basin, falls through the grate and enters the Drainage Pipe below.

A third way for water to enter is to connect Gutter Down Spouts Directly into a Drainage System.

Sump pump Installation in Oklahoma City and all of Central and Western Oklahoma. Sump Pumps are the only way to get water out of a basement. We install Sump Pumps too.  A French Drain or A Surface Drain Needs a Sump Pump when it is up hill in all directions from the drain.  When water can’t flow downhill to the exit of a Channel Drain, a Sump Pump is needed.

Pump Size refers to how powerful it is not how physically large it is.  For Home or Small Business use a 1/3 Horse or a 1/2 Horse Works Best.  Larger Pumps such as a 1 Horse Pump must be ordered by a supplier and must be Hard Wired to 220 voltage by an electrician.

Sump Pumps can be connected to French Drains.  When you have a low-lying area that needs a French Drain, but it is up-hill in all directions and there is no way for the French Drain to move water to the Exit Point, a Sump Pump can be used. Sump Pumps can also be used to pump water out of Basements or other enclosed low-lying areas.  Most Residential applications require a sump pump that has a power rating of 1 horse to 2 horse.  (Horse being horsepower)

Clean Water

A “Clean” pump must pump water that is relatively clean, or it will clog up after a while.  ” Dirty” Pump can handle water that is not so clean that has small pieces of Debris in it.  It will also clog if the debris is too thick or large.  There are several techniques that Oklahoma Drainage uses to keep a sump pump “Clog Free” and running well. One technique is to place the sump pump on top of a cement block inside the pump cavity. 

Debris and unwanted solids fall the bottom of the sump cavity and never goes through the sump.  The sump cavity must then be cleaned out on a regular basis depending on the usual amount of debris.  Once a Year is typical.  Also putting a sump pump under a tree is a bad idea.  Leaves will clog up a sump faster than anything.  Pine needles are the worst.

FRENCH DRAIN INSTALLATION IN EDMOND OKLAHOMA

 

 

Edmond Oklahoma has been the location for many French Drain Installations for us in the past several years.  Recently we ripped out an old Surface Drain that was under a deck.  The Surface Drain was too small for the job and did not Protect the Foundation from Standing Water.  

The First step was to take out part of the deck along the wall.  Next we took out the Surface Drain and the Three-Inch Pipe which was too small.  Digging a trench along the foundation came next.  We had to ensure the, “Fall” to make sure the water would run from left to right. Next a French Drain Liner needed to be installed.  

This was necessary to maintain the integrity of the trench and to keep the French Drainpipe from filling up with sand and getting clogged over the next few years. We then installed 4 inch ADS Perf/Soc French Drainpipe along the course of the French Drain.

 Next, we connected the end of the French Drainpipe to Solid 4 Inch ADS Drainpipe to continue along the trench to the Pop-Up Emitter at the Exit Point.

A good Drainage System

has a point where water enters the System.  This is usually through a French Drain, Surface Drain, or a Gutter Down Spout that is connected into a Drainpipe.   Water will run through either Perforated French Drain Pipe or Solid Drain Pipe depending on the Drainage System Design.  Water will flow downhill to an Exit Point where the water will be released out of the Drainage System.  This is a done through a Pop-Up Emitter or a Curb Fitting.

French Drain Installation —   French Drains are designed to do a lot of things.  If you have an area that has unwanted water standing in it or running across it, a French Drain can be the answer.  A French Drain is a trench that runs across the Drainage Problem Area.  A French Drain Pipe is placed in the bottom of the trench.  The French Drain Pipe is perforated with thousands of small holes.  In most cases the Drain Pipe has a nylon soc around the pipe to act as a filter for the French Drain.  The French Drain trench is then filled with some type of small rock or stone.  We typically uses crushed 1 inch Lime Stone to cover the French Drain Pipe.  The dirt that was dug out of the trench is taken away or spread out around the French Drain.  The Lime Stone replaces the dirt and fills the French Drain Trench all the way to the surface.

When water come in contact with the French Drain, it seeps down through the stones and into the French Drain Pipe.  It then flows through the Drain Pipe to the exit point.  Typically a French Drain will have two possible exit points.   The First is called a “Pop-Up Emitter.”  It is a Green Lid on top of a release basin for the French Drain.

The second type of Exit Point for a French Drain is a “Curb Fitting.”  The Curb Fitting is installed through the curb going out into the street.  The French Drain Pipe runs to the Curb.  The curb is cut out and the Curb Fitting is cemented through the Curb.

French Drains are designed to move large amounts of water.  A French Drain moves water away from the Drainage Problem area from the Surface like a large Surface Drain, But also below ground, or sub surface.  Most people don’t take into account the water that flows to a problem area underground.  Sub surface water flow is not eliminated by a Surface Drain.  A French Drain can move away water that is below the surface of the ground and drain away water that is on the surface.

Today we installed a 6 Inch French Drain at an apartment complex near Lake Heffner.  The French Drain started in the back yard of one unit.  The Drain Pipe went under the fence and into the adjoining unit’s back yard.  The French Drain then looped around their patio and out under their fence to the west.  To get the 6 inch Drain Pipe to the correct Exit Point, we had to cut out 30 feet of sidewalk and run the French Drain Pipe under the sidewalk.  Next, we replaced the sidewalk with new concrete.  Finally, we dug a drainage ditch across the front yard to the parking lot.  We covered the Drain Pipe with sod that we carefully removed when digging the trench.  At the edge of the parking lot a 6 inch Pop-Up Emitter was installed to release the Storm water.  Seven Gutters were connected directly into the Drainage System along the way.

This particular Drainage System was made up of 55 Feet of 6 inch French Drain, 78 Feet of Solid ADS Solid Drain Pipe, Seven Gutter Connections, and one 6 inch Pop-Up Emitter.

Recently we installed a French Drain inside the court yard of a rest home in Norman.  We had several interesting challenges to overcome that were not typical for a French Drain Installation.  The court yard was in the center of the home and was a secure area for the patrons.  We had to put down painters tarps to run our wheel barrows over.  We took out 44 loads of dirt and brought in 52 loads of Crushed one inch lime stone for the French Drain.  Each trip was over a hundred yards from the trailer in the parking lot, in the front door, down the hall, making two turns along the way.  Each time we had to be escorted by security.  Needless to say, the installation of this particular drainage system took a while.In the above picture, the French Drain runs along the low area crossing all the areas where water would stand each time it rained.

When a French Drain is installed, a big mistake that is made by many people is to cover up the gravel with dirt.  This is a big mistake.  Basically it is ” Putting the cork back in the bottle.”  If the French Drain is in full sun and has a type of grass surrounding it that spreads on its own such a ” Tift” or “Bermuda” , Grass will grow over it and the French Drain will eventually disappear.  Grass covering a French Drain is a good thing if it grows across the drain without adding dirt.  The Grass thatch acts a water filter preventing clogging and extending the life of the Drainage System.

When a French Drain is in Full Shade, or the surrounding grass will not spread on its own, such as with Fescue,  other steps must be taken.  One option is to just leave it alone.  If you don’t mind how it looks, it will drain a large amount of water for many years.  Many times a French Drain can be a landscaping focal point.  They can be dressed up with all kinds of Rocks and Stones and Plants.

Since 1993 we have gained a lot of experience addressing drainage problems.  Drainage problems can be complicated.  The solution is not always clear to the untrained eye. Oklahoma Drainage and Sprinkler Repair has redone or overhauled many drainage systems that were installed by, “weekend warriors, a brother-in-law, or a landscaping company that also installs drains.”  They all can install Drainage Systems, Just not very well.  We have over 26 years of experience Diagnosing Drainage Problems.  This ensures that a Drainage System that we install won’t have Drain Pipes that are too small, or Surface Drains installed where French Drains Should be placed, or Exit Points that allow water to Stand and become stagnant.  The above examples are just three of many “Pit – Falls” that our experienced Drainage System Experts can easily avoid.

 

We take into account many things when performing a ,” Drainage Diagnostic.”

 

We consider how many sources are providing water to the problem.  Usually there are more than one.

 

We consider the type of soil on the property.  A French Drain in a sandy yard is installed differently than one in a yard with a clay base.

 

We consider how many exit points are available and will install at least two when possible.

Drainage Systems can be made up of one drain or a combination of many drains.  Drainage problems can be very complex.   Complex Drainage Problems may require a combination of several different types of drains all inter-connected and working together.  Other times the drainage problem may be simple and straight-forward requiring only one drain or several of the same type of drain connected together.

An example of a complex drainage system would be:  A French Drain in the back yard connected to a Surface Drain near a flower bed connected to several gutter downspouts, which are connected to a Channel Drain going across a driveway, which is connected to additional Surface Drain in the front yard, which runs to a Curb Fitting that lets all the water drain out on to the street.

A simple Drainage System might consist of a Surface Drain that is connected to a second Surface Drain which runs to a Pop-up Emitter which lets water drain over the curb and into the street.

An “Exit Point” is the term used for where all the water leaves the Drainage System.  Determining the Exit Point is very critical.  It is one of the first things we do when diagnosing a Drainage Problem.
